Country Roads

By-ways, Highways and Back Road Adventures

Brought to you by www.AskAda.com

Happy New Year  and welcome to the first  edition of AskAda’s monthly travel news Country Roads.

Country Roads  is for the traveler who wants to experience “life”  in the HEART of the region, whether you go in person, or just read Country Roads monthly, we hope to bring you a “sense” of what life is like in our rural towns and communities.

We’ll bring you activities and attractions, fine food and dining, information on lodging, weather, gas prices and best of all the people who live here.

January 2005 brings us to the Costal South in Florida & Alabama.  This month life here is focused on things to do while the beaches are being re-opened. Mardi Gras parades have started along the coast from Texas to Florida & visitors are learning the fine art of catching moon pies and the catch phrase “throw me some beads mister”.  King cakes, beads of purple, gold & green, specially made costumes and floats make the tradition exciting.  Revelers of all ages reach for the treasures thrown from the majestic floats.  Daily parades, parties and balls, are the highlights of the next few weeks.  This year Fat Tuesday is on February 8, the day before Lent begins.  Read more about Mardi Gras by clicking on these links.

And talk about FOOD – Alabama is THE BEST when you are looking for seafood.  Every Friday most restaurants offer a seafood buffet and that means fresh seafood from the Gulf of Mexico. Here’s our link to Good Eats in Alabama. http://www.askada.com/goodeatsal.htm

If you are looking for  warm, white sandy beaches that have re-opened since IVAN came blowing thru, check out Dauphin Island, Alabama, just south of Mobile.  The daytime temperature is between 60-70 degrees and mostly  sunny.

The local sport this month is “coonin’ for oysters” Yes, it is the season for fresh oysters.  On a mid-morning visit to the shore I met a local woman sitting in the sun on  the tailgate, knitting and watching  her husband who was coonin’. She filled me in on the details.  It’s called coonin’ because it is very much like the way raccoons get oysters, along the shoreline, at low tide… making the process much easier.  It’s also nice to have a boat to throw them in, but a 5 gallon bucket will work as well for keeping your “catch”.

The truth is that it’s LOTS of fun, AND very good eating, steamed, fried or anyway  you like ‘em.

Now here’s the Photo of the Month…
